The Pine Tree State

A brief introduction to golf in the state of Maine

The Pine Tree State is the largest of the New England states, and across its vast beauty is a tremendous golf scene with a history and variety as rich as any other.

The courses in Maine are both historically significant and examples of wonderful modern golf design. The Links at Outlook by Brian Silva takes the player through a delightful combination of links-style open land and a walk through the woods, and Cape Arundel Golf Club, originally designed in 1896 and finished by Walter Travis, is perhaps one of the finest tests you can play under 6000 yards in America. Frequently enjoyed over the decades by the Bush family, it was listed as part of the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Several other courses throughout the state provide breathtaking scenes and a fascinating history. The Kebo Valley Club, the state's oldest club and one of the oldest in the nation, is famous for when President Taft played it and made a 27 on its now 17th hole, and the courses at Sugarloaf and and Sunday River, both designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., provide additional exceptional tests situated near some of New England's finest skiing areas and tremendous views.
